Hermes Agent by Nous Research is an open-source agent built around persistent memory and skills that it learns over time. Like OpenClaw, it is designed to run on a machine you control. Here is what hosting it involves, and when a managed agent is the simpler choice.

Self-hosting Hermes Agent

  1. Install — The project provides an install script that sets up Python tooling and the CLI. Review the script before running it.

  2. Configure — Run the setup wizard to choose a model provider and tools.

  3. Connect messaging — Start the messaging gateway to reach your agent from Telegram, Discord, Slack and other apps.

  4. Keep it online — Run it on an always-on server and keep the gateway supervised so it restarts after crashes and reboots.
